In his paintings, Michael Triegel enters into a dialog with earlier epochs of painting. With great skill and old-masterly perfection, he develops an extraordinary style that echoes the art of the Italian Renaissance. His very own multi-layered, enigmatic and symbolic visual language is evident in a broad spectrum of pictorial themes, and Michael Triegel became famous in 2010 when he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Pope Benedict XVI. Since then, he has concentrated on religious themes, and some of his important paintings from recent years have been commissioned by churches for sacred spaces. This large-format volume presents for the first time the works created in recent years, including still lifes, portraits and mythological subjects, supplemented by drawings, landscape watercolors and prints. Fascinating detailed illustrations, an essay on Neo-Mannerism by Horst Bredekamp and an article on the key work “Transformation of the Gods” by Kai Uwe Schierz round off the volume.
