The chalk lithograph “Harlequin is wept over” shows one of the most prominent themes in Werner Tübke’s work. The theme of fools accompanied Tübke early on. While he was working on the panorama painting in Bad Frankenhausen, the depictions of fools became more intense alongside the vanitas motifs. The jester symbolizes the tragic and melancholy existence of the artist, but also reflects society’s high expectations of the artist, as he can and should create something extraordinary. The sheet is sold unframed. The graphic from 1981 was published in an edition of 100.
