In Markus Matthias Krüger’s naturalistic paintings, the viewer encounters landscapes domesticated by man, which initially give the impression of being real, but are exaggerated and open up their own interpretations. For the first time, a publication provides an almost complete overview of his painterly oeuvre. “Everything is pressing towards the landscape,” said Philipp Otto Runge in 1802. The landscape paintings of the Leipzig painter Markus Matthias Krüger follow a German Romantic tradition starting with Caspar David Friedrich, which can be traced all the way to Wolfgang Mattheuer. In the tension between the precision of the old masters and the modern clarity of his compositions, Krüger establishes a new interpretation of the genre and his role as an innovator of contemporary landscape painting.
