Tragicomic world theater
Sven Hoppler (*1995 in Basel) impresses even at a young age with his strikingly precise paintings. In his elaborate glaze paintings, he uses contemporary motifs to pick up on pictorial types and gestures from art history. This results in works that play with pictorial traditions. In terms of composition, they tie in with traditional iconographies, but often surprise the viewer at second glance with twists, alienations or ironic refractions. Fascinating detailed illustrations, exhibition and studio views and two text contributions by the renowned art historians Mark Gisbourne and Beat Wyss also provide an insight into Sven Hoppler’s work to date.
