In 1519, Lucas Cranach the Elder created a three-panel altarpiece for the Marian altar in the west choir of Naumburg Cathedral. While the main panels were destroyed in 1541 in the course of an anti-image campaign, the wings survived in the cathedral treasury vault of Naumburg Cathedral. After more than 500 years, the two original wings have been supplemented by a new central section created by Michael Triegel, as well as by the addition of predellas. This catalog shows the creation of the altar with many insights into Michael Triegel’s studio. The introductory text is by Holger Kunde. The photographs are by Emilian Tsubaki, who accompanied Michael Triegel over a period of two years as part of the film work for the documentary “From the Visible to the Invisible” by Paul Smaczny.
