Trained as a sculptor in the class of Sepp Mages, Düsseldorf Art Academy
1941
After being drafted into the Reich Labor Service, Günther Blau suffers a serious injury in the Crimea, which leads to the amputation of his right leg. Relocation to Elnhausen near Marburg before the end of the war
1946
Begins studying painting with Hans Gött at the Munich Academy and with Paul Mildner in Rottach am Tegernsee
1952
Begins studying under Kurt Wehlte and Wilhelm Schnarrenberger at the Karlsruhe Academy; stricter formal language, restrained colors, still lifes and cityscapes dominate; travels to Italy
1963
Moves to Marburg (confrontation with National Socialism, pictures such as the “KZ-Madonna” are created) While researching in the Marburg public library, he meets his future wife Ruthild Klaus
1967
Marriage to Ruthild née Klaus; two daughters together who die in childhood as a result of a serious metabolic disease
1977
Awarded the Von der Heydt Prize of the City of Wuppertal

Presentation of the Marburg Art Prize

Günther Blau dies in Marburg on November 16 after a long, serious illness
