From September 25, 2026, through January 3, 2027, the Neubrandenburg Art Collection will present the exhibition “Spaces of Longing: Surrealism and Magical Realism in the Art of the GDR.”
Through Surrealism and magical realism, art in the GDR at times subtly undermined the political and aesthetic paradigms of Socialist Realism. Artists such as Erich Kissing, Horst Sakulowski, and Heinz Zander developed experimental practices to forge their own paths within the cultural and artistic landscape of the GDR.
