Since November 2, 2025, the Cranach-Triegel altar from Naumburg Cathedral has been in the chapel of the Campo Santo Teutonico in the Vatican, where it will be on display for two years. After ICOMOS threatened to withdraw the World Heritage title from Naumburg Cathedral, the altar had to be removed from the west choir. The two-year exile is now intended to cool down the explosive situation and give those involved the opportunity to find a good solution.

Exhibition in the Kunsthalle Jesuitenkirche in Aschaffenburg.

The approximately 50 works on display offer a multi-layered insight into the work of one of the most idiosyncratic representatives of figurative painting in post-war German art. Grützke's powerful visual language, characterized by intellectual acuity and subversive humour, consistently places people at the center. His works do not depict idealized images, but tragicomic, complex and deeply social individuals. Over the course of half a century, he created an unmistakable oeuvre that dissects role models, masquerades and social absurdities with a sharp eye. A narrative panorama of human behavior unfolds in portraits, group pictures and scenic compositions.

Leipzig is a hotspot for the visual arts. Discover over 50 works from the New Leipzig School, renowned artists from Leipzig who trained there at one of the oldest art academies in Germany. The focus is on figuration and craftsmanship. Highlights from the collection of the Drents Museum in Assen will be on display, including works by Ulrich Hachulla and his student Matthias Ludwig.

From September 6, 2025 to March 1, 2026, the Drents Museum Assen will be showing the exhibition "Microcosm - The world in a cabinet of curiosities". This is the farewell exhibition of long-time Director General Harry Tupan, who will be leaving the museum due to his retirement. Harry Tupan takes the visitor into a single large work of art in which the most bizarre rarities stand alongside special contemporary works of art. Also on display is the small-format painting "Selbst als Wendekopf" by Michael Triegel from 2025 (ill.).

To mark the 100th birthday of Peter Ludwig, the Ludwig Gallery in Saarlouis is showing works of East German art from the Ludwig Collection. In addition to his pioneering collecting activities, important works by artists from the former GDR will be presented. The exhibition shows works by over 35 artists - including Wolfgang Mattheuer, Willi Sitte and Werner Tübke - and reflects the diversity of artistic forms of expression in the 1970s and 1980s in the GDR.

The exhibition runs from July 9 to November 16, 2025.

Following a positive decision by Unesco, the Cranach-Triegel altarpiece can remain permanently in Naumburg Cathedral - but in a different place than before. The retable is to be placed in the north transept in future. This location is considered the best option because the work will have its own, dignified space within the cathedral.

Tübke's watercolors and drawings in graphite, pen and chalk testify to his great creative freedom and independence. They are an essential part of his artistic work: he collected ideas in them, made formal considerations and developed a wide variety of themes. The Städel is now presenting the outstanding donation of 46 drawings and watercolors by Tübke from Barbara and Eduard Beaucamp in an exhibition dedicated to his graphic work and his metaphorical visual language.

In memory of the Peasants' War events of May 14 and 15, 1525 near Frankenhausen, part of the state exhibition "freiheyt 1525. 500 Jahre Bauernkrieg" is being held at the Panorama Museum Bad Frankenhausen under the title "Der Welt Lauf". The exhibition focuses on the art-historical examination of contemporary historical sources and their artistic treatment in the monumental painting by Werner Tübke.

The Münzmeisterhaus project space in Corburg is showing works by Matthias Ludwig, Jan Dörre and Falk Gernegroß in collaboration with the Stahlberg Collection from April 26 to June 30, 2025. 14 paintings by the three Leipzig artists will be on display.

A tour in the presence of the artists will take place on April 26 at 3 p.m.

A new publication was recently published by Kerber Verlerg. Behind Closed Doors presents 55 further works from the Stahlberg Collection, which is housed in the Lichtenstein Tower in Coburg and has been growing steadily since the 1980s.

On the occasion of the 100. On the occasion of Bernhard Heisig's 100th birthday, the Museum of Fine Arts is organizing a cabinet exhibition dedicated to the painter and co-founder of the Leipzig School. The exhibition focuses on the extensive holdings of paintings and prints from the museum's own collection, which were supplemented in 2009 by permanent loans from the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation.

The Suermondt-Ludwig Museum in Aachen is hosting a survey exhibition of the Leipzig artist from March 9 to June 15, 2025. Over 50 paintings from the artist's oeuvre will be on display. Highlights of the exhibition include his portrait of Pope Benedict XVI (2010) and the much-discussed design for the central panel of the Cranach Altarpiece in Naumburg Cathedral (2022).
